A question about using carpet tiles....please help!?

We just got a new house which is unfortunately tiled with ceramic tile in our family room, where we will do most of our living. I have a 1 year old who is rough and dives from couch to couch. If he fell on his head on that ceramic tile, the results could be terrible.

Keep in mind, we are renting this house....

I was trying to find a throw rug to put on the floor but I found something called carpet tiles. It looks to be perfect for us because of the way I could ';free hand'; where I want to put the carpet. I think that this could be a perfect option for us, except for one concern.

How does this stuff stick to your floor AND would it ruin the perfectly good and beautiful ceramic tile underneath it? When we move out of this house, I want to leave their house in the exact condition that it was when we moved in.

Do you think it would be possible to lay these carpet tiles down without ruining the ceramic tile underneath? Also, are these carpet tiles very padded and coushy?A question about using carpet tiles....please help!?
With all due respect and certainly understanding your concerns there are options.

After installing thousands of sq. ft. of various types of flooring I have some suggestions.

First of all anything of any permanence that you do would have to be approved. Secondly, carpet tiles are likely less than 1/4 inch thick, especially when compacted and would offer little cushioning to any head, infants or adult.

As a parent I've experienced the same issues, and you might consider that the child isn't doing what you suggest 24/7, hence you might try something not quite so pretty, but maybe as effective. When the infant is active, in those areas, you might have just a sleeping bag doubled up under his portential crash area...OR simple foam cushioning sheets. You might invest in a lot of large deco pillow? or use the furniture cushions surrounding the JUMP sites? Certainly it might not be aesthetically pleasing, but the point is safety.

I understand something else about this issue. The cushioning, if so obvious, might encourage the child to not fear falling, and actually might induce trying? When I was a child I tried more than once to FLY from our barn roofs.

At 1 year old it's likely that the child should be monitored too, when in that ';active'; mood, and as matures, part of his learning process should likely be to find alternatives to his current actions, even to the point of bouncing on the foam on the floor, not diving onto it. (no offfense meant)

As a long time contractor I suggest carpet tiles will be a waste of money. As a parent I have to empathize in your desire for safety. One way NOT to learn the lesson you suggest would be for him to experience injury.

line floor with black plastic like u would use in gardens, place carpet tiles on it. plastic will hold carpet tiles in place with no harm 2 original ceramic flooring. carpet tiles come in a variety of thicknesses. when it's time to move, tiles will just lift off
No, carpet tile wouldn't be a good solution, they are supposed to be glued down and they are not thick enough to add padding for your child, look for a good 8x10 rug that you can take with you when you move out may be a better idea and it's a lot thicker for cushioning the falls.
Just put in carpet tiles in my basement-inexpensive, padded and looks great.

They were installed with minimal double sided carpet tape-we just layed out the tape in a large star pattern-more than enough to hold the 2 ft x 2 ft tiles.

When you move the tape will come off-may need to wipe areas that have residual glue on them-use WD-40 to remove traces of glue and then clean tile floors as usual-no problem

visit carpetiles.com to see installation instruction-thats where I bought my tiles
